Losing weight and being healthy are two very different ends of a spectrum because there are healthy and unhealthy ways to lose weight. You may have heard about different weight loss strategies that work according to your body type and even blood type. Well, I'm here to tell you that if you have tried to eat healthy in the hopes of losing weight and still haven't seen results, then it's not a disease, but a malfunction.
The video above tells you about my health story and journey of becoming a doctor. For about 15 years I always complained of my stomach hurting, and after seeing several doctors who only tried to cover up my symptoms instead of figure out my malfunction, I was underweight and undernourished. Dry toast and cereal were about the only things I could stomach.Â
It wasn't until I was in college and saw the chiropractor that my symptoms were finally relieved. No, he didn't pop my back and my stomach felt better, but he took blood samples to figure out what I was eating that my body was reacting to.Â
Remember that song, "the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone..." and so on. So if you're still taking the approach, that is looking at your body piece by piece by piece you are never going to be healthy. Every system in your body is connected. Since something was wrong with my stomach, it was beginning to have an effect on my whole body. If something is not working right, it throws off everything else. There are certain factors such as genes and the environment that we do not have control over, but we do have control over what we put in our mouths.Â
So how many of you read the different characteristics of the body types and are like, "I am so this body type." How many of you felt like you were more than one of them? Â How many of you felt like you were all of them? Or how many of you felt like none of them fit you exactly? Ok. The thing is, while all bodies are made differently, if there's something wrong, or a certain food isn't treating you right, your "body type" is not rejecting it, but your body as a whole is, and you need to figure it out. Unless you are allergic to something, food is not your enemy; food is your friend and your medicine. Â
Many doctors provide medications to suppress symptoms, while your overall condition continues to worsen, which creates a dependency on more medications, which then creates a barrier for overall healing. This is when I turn to functional medicine. It helps us find out what is wrong, which then allows us to fix it. I will not just give you a medicine to help you deal with it.Â
Taking multiple medications to deal with multiple symptoms puts stress on the body. Now, our bodies are equipped to deal with stress. But when we are exposed to more and more stress than your body can adapt to, the only thing that can happen is a malfunction.  Now is stress a good thing or a bad thing?  I think it's a good thing. Why? Because the only people who have no stress are dead. That may seem blunt, but it's true. I would rather have stress than the alternative. But the most important thing is balance.Â
The biggest take away from this is to figure out if what is wrong with your weight loss journey or overall health is something you are doing and putting into your body. Don't just cover up the symptoms with foreign entities if they can be fixed by something the body needs, which is food.
Remember food is your friend!Â
